Description
This training course was designed for patrol officers and first responders. Most often, similar training is provided to detectives and criminal investigators due to their involvement in more in-depth interviews and criminal interrogations. However, it is the patrol force and first responders who frequently have the initial contact with the victims, witnesses and suspects within investigations. It is this initial contact that can lead an investigation in the proper direction or misdirect it down the wrong path resulting in inaccurate or incomplete information. Improper questioning of victims, witnesses and suspects can affect the memory and recall of the events under investigation and impair the accuracy and reliability of the information obtained. Improperly obtaining a written statement from an individual can also taint the information to the point that further analysis of the statement in an attempt to assess the veracity of the information is negatively affected. Also, the patrol officer’s ability to detect possible deception is a critical skill and safety issue that should constantly be improved. Young officers as well as seasoned patrolmen will gain new insights and strategies to use throughout their patrol shifts.
